I recently had the pleasure of watching Keith Owen's latest DVD "Favorite
Moves Volume 2". Keith is a Black Belt under Professor Pedro Sauer so I
expected it to be packed full of solid material - it was and then some
Keith showed an eclectic blend of techniques covering all positions. The
moves are high percentage and I especially like his approach to the basics.
His teaching is detailed, easy to understand and he has a great sense of
humor to boot. I highly recommend this to any serious student of
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Keith rocks!

A Look at one of my other Videos For You

My initial thought was how fortunate we are to train under Pedro; many of the moves you showed served as great reminders of things Pedro has shown in seminars (I forget more than I remember). People who have never trained under Pedro and drank from that stream are in for a real treat; people who do train under Pedro are in for a great memory jog with some extras.
In addition, I appreciated your willingness to give credit to various people. We all stand on the shoulders of giants.
One last thing before commenting in more detail on a few of the techniques themselves, you are a gifted communicator and it serves you well. Your teaching is easy to follow:
* S-Mount series: top-game
I loved the toolbox of finishes that you showed here, and plan on adding them to my game (my bread and butter from the S-mount has been choke to armlock, far side or near side). I found myself wanting more information on set ups to get the elbows flared though.
* Guard cross-choke: bottom-game
You really shined here! I loved the details on not burning the grip out and how we get one chance. The "bow and arrow" set up is making it on my favorites list and the "cobra strike" underscores your communication skills. It may have been beyond the scope of your DVD, but details on breaking someone's posture down would have plus'ed this section.
* Kimura options: top game
Your commitment to the basics and how they work is desperately needed in the Jiu-Jitsu community. Too often people move on to "higher percentage" moves when all they need is few more details to make the foundational moves work (in my opinion they move on too quickly-there's a reason why these moves are part of the foundation)

Here's a quick look at my background in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:
I am a 1st Degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under Professor Pedro Sauer
(8th Degree red and black belt) and run my school in Boise/Meridian Idaho. I have
trained in Jiu-Jitsu for the last 18 years and made it my life's work to promote the
technical side of gi, no-gi and MMA Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
You work hard at your BJJ game and you should have every advantage. This is one of the reasons I have put this collection of videos together for you. The power of solid instruction from the best in the world has enabled me to achieve some amazing things, such as...
*4th Degree Black Belt in TAI Kung-Fu
*Black Sash in Wu Wei Gung-Fu -
under Bruce Lee Student Joseph Cowles *Inducted in 2007 USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame *Martial Arts School Owner - Ultimate Jiu-Jitsu
I have been able to use my training to diversify in many different directions such as use of force and arrest and control training as well.
My point is to show you when you train with dedication, imagination and conviction you can achieve anything.
But if these 2 Collections Of Videos hasn't got you excited...Here Is Even More
"Your Opponents Will Be Tapping Like a Marching Drum..."
Bonus Series - 14 Additional Videos
"If You Are Serious about Your BJJ Game...The Time to take action is NOW!.."
I can't get on the mat or in the cage for you, but you can get serious about your game and train like you mean it. Membership at a club with a top trainer can be be costly with fees for monthly memberships...My goal is to try to eliminate some of the costs. These videos have been specifically compiled so you can take them with you on your iPod or iPhone or any other MP4 compatible device. You can literally take these videos with you anywhere.
Like I said I want top instruction to be available to everyone at a price which is reasonable.
So If I told you the videos were going to cost less than $1 each, it might seem fair when you consider 18 years of experience from a hall of fame BJJ Black Belt....$67 is probably a fair price.... but you aren't going to pay close to that much either.
I am committed to getting your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills to be there best which is why the price for Art of the Choke package....

I have never met Keith Owen personally, so it was a nice surprise to be
asked to do a review of his new DVD - Favourite Moves Volume 2.
When I first watched the DVD, I was surprised that many of his
favourite moves are also some of my personal favourite moves. A classic example
being the little trick he demonstrates to get to the mount from side
control. Also his demonstration of the S-Mount is one I like as I myself
have used this to great effect in competitions
The thing I like most about this DVD is probably the detail of each
position. When it first arrived in the mail, I sat down to watch it, only
to find that Keith has stacked so much information into it, that it
took several viewing windows. And there is no shortage of positions on
this collection either, with 25 chapters, each dealing with different
positions, and in most cases there are several different techniques shown
within each of these.
This is not one of those 30-minute run-throughs, but a thorough
explanation of each of his positions. On top of this, I can see that Keith is
loving sharing his knowledge of jiu-jitsu; it's almost as though you
are sitting in on one his classes.

Let me first say, I own just about every BJJ instructional DVD past and present.
and I enjoyed your DVD very much and picked up a few unique details and even saw a couple variations/techniques that I haven't seen before in my 11 + years of BJJ training.
Your teaching style is very clear, concise, and well thought out.
I was impressed with the level of detail you imparted. This is something I strive for as well and I think it's incredibly important, and unfortunately, it is lacking in a lot of BJJ instructors. So, thanks again for the wonderful DVD!

Keith Owen is a black belt under Pedro Sauer and teaches BJJ in Boise, Idaho in the US; Keith had originally viewed one of my reviews on www.lockflow.com and asked me to write an independent review of his new DVD release, so here it is!
Keith begins the DVD with a brief introduction, explaining that the techniques shown in the DVD are his favourite moves that he regularly uses in class when sparring with his students and claims that they are moves that you won't see on any other compilation.
There are twenty four chapters on the DVD covering a wide variety of positions including kimura counters; are bar defences; shoulder locks; north south position; escapes; mount attacks, turtle defence counters and many more.
In a number of chapters, Keith takes you through four and five techniques from one position, so it's really a true value for money DVD. For the most part of the DVD, Keith's claims to uniqueness holds true; out of all the techniques, I personally have seen a few of the techniques on other DVD's, but as for the rest of the techniques, these are some of the funkiest and eclectic moves around, definitely not seen on other compilations.
My favourite technique from the DVD is so simple to use that after seeing it once, I managed to pull it off in class the same night! Which one I hear you cry? Well, that would be telling wouldn't it, I need a few secret moves of my own!!
This DVD is crammed full of techniques and is aimed at jiu jitsu practitioners regardless of belt level, there is something on it for everyone. The techniques are easy to execute and don't require any special powers of flexibility and dexterity to pull them off in training

Favorite Moves by Pedro Sauer BJJ black belt Keith Owen is a collection of random moves that are some of Keith's favorites like the title implies. On the DVD you will find 23 techniques covering such topics as side control submissions, chokes, submission defenses and more for a total length of 74 minutes. The production and audio was professionally done and you will have no problem seeing or hearing what is being taught.
Out of all of these techniques I have a few favorites of my own. The Guard Pass for example is a standing pass in which you bait your opponent to apply an arm bar. Once they do go for the arm bar you pretty much passed their guard and take side control. You would think this move is risky to do, but it really isn't. Another favorite is the Guillotine Defense. I've tried other ways to escape this submission, but this is by far the easiest one for me to do. It does contain a lot of details, but even with that, the move was easy to learn. I've added these two moves to my game and have successfully used them while rolling.
Another interesting set of moves is the Sitting Mount Four Sub Flow. You literally sit on your opponent's chest allowing you to catch your opponent in a nice arm bar, among other things. It does feel awkward at first, due to the off balance feeling you get, but I am becoming more and more comfortable with it.
Over the years, I have seen quite a few instructional tapes and DVD's and most overlap each other with the same type of material. I can honestly say I haven't seen the majority of these techniques, which makes this DVD well worth the money. If you are looking for some moves to add to your current game or you want to brush up certain techniques with new details, you should definitely check this out.

Keith Owen is perhaps the best BJJ instructor that you've never really heard of. A black belt under Pedro Sauer, his "Favorite Moves" instructional DVD is off the charts! I was really, REALLY impressed with this DVD and highly recommend it to anyone out there who is studying BJJ.
The 1st DVD is all in the gi, but I think there is a lot to apply with no-gi as well. He covers submissions, counters, escapes, sitting mount, side control, S-mount, turtle position, north-south and much more.
Owen is an instructor who uses very clear language and is excellent at explaining techniques. He explains techniques from the opponents point of view and what you should be thinking of during the technique to set him up. I've seen many more famous BJJ instructors fail where Owen has succeeded.
The production value is fantastic. Probably the best I've seen for a BJJ instructional recently. It appears that everything has been filmed digitally becauses the images are crystal clear. The sound is perfect and you can always hear Owen as he explains techniques.
There were several things that impressed me with this DVD. The first is the level of technical expertise. You may think that all BJJ DVD's are pretty decent...they're not. Owen offers extended explanation and small subtle details that make a huge difference in application and success. I've seen guys with incredibly thick Brazilian accents say things like, "Ok, you got the arm now fall down into the armbar." That's it. Next technique. Owen offers precise and detailed instruction that makes the techniques "technical" and "tight".
Another thing I really enjoy is that he teaches from a perspective of experience that you believe. Sometimes you have guys who are naturals say things like, "You just do X, Y and Z" or you have guys that aren't qualified to teach or dont' have the knack sort of explain things is a robotic way.
Owen teaches in a way where you really feel like he's performed these techniques successfully many times. He says things like, "You think you could do this, but it won't work, the guy usually does X and then you go for Y". He says this in a confident and assured tone that helps you to feel comfortable going for these techniques in live practice.
The final thing I really like about this DVD is that nearly everything he showed was something new.
I haven't seen anything Keith Owen is doing on any other DVD. The techniques are new or are explained in such a technical way that even old techniques feel new. He talks a lot about setups, baiting your opponent and transitions. If you want BJJ from the Rickson Gracie lineage, this is exactly what you've been looking for. For the blue belt to black belt level BJJ practitioner, this is probably the "perfect" DVD.
I always give people fair and positive reviews, but if you are looking for the next great BJJ instructional, this is it. No joke. You may not know who Keith Owen is, but after watching this DVD you'll be glad you do now www.KO-reviews.com

Keith,
I got your video yesterday. I have to let you know it was well done. I have been rollin' since 1992 and this is by far one of the best video's out there.
You even speak perfect english (a crack at the earlier videos I used to watch from Brazil). Again, very well done.
